Hi there…

A year or so ago, when we wanted to restart our sprinklers after the winter blowout and shutdown, we ended up with a broken part. When Gary’s Lawn Service came to start up our sprinklers that year, they were going to charge us $200 to fix what may have been caused by their blowout in the first place. When I asked around, Tim Cochran over at All Wet Irrigation was recommended.

I gave Tim a call and he came out the next day – fixing the issue for less than $100 and in about 15 minutes. We had him come out and do the sprinkler blowout about four months later and he charged about $25 less than the other guys we’d had out. So to say the least, we were happy to go with All Wet Irrigation.

Tim is great. We him out a few months ago to start up our sprinklers for the Spring. He and his helper found one sprinkler head that needed replacing and tacked that on to the already reasonable startup cost. No big deal. We’ll have him come out and shut down our sprinklers in a few weeks for Fall…

He even recommended a sod service that we’re going to have come out and do an estimate on redoing our back yard…

So if you’re looking for a friendly, reasonably-priced sprinkler company – I can’t recommend Tim and All Wet Irrigation enough. They’ve been great!

Give them a call at their office at 475-8500 and I’m sure they can help you out with any irrigation system issues you might have.

So you’re looking for a place to hang out with good beer, good food, and all the best games on television? If you’re on the north end of Colorado Springs, you’ve probably driven past one of your best options more than a few times – the Back East Bar and Grill.

TVs are scattered on the walls throughout the entire place, typically tuned to ESPN of some variety, baseball, hockey, football (college or NFL), basketball, golf – whatever time of year it happens to be. Something’s always on!

The always friendly folks who work there will make sure your drinks stay full and that everything tastes great. From beers and mixed drinks to a simple glass of iced tea or Diet Coke, they have something for everybody.

And the food… oh my. They have an awesome Philly Cheese Steak sandwich that makes my mouth water just thinking about it. Or if you’re in the mood for a burger, I can heartily recommend their Chili Cheese Burger. Homemade chili on an open faced burger fixed the way you want it. And don’t forget the onion rings or the fried mushrooms starter to add to your delectable caloric intake. :)

My wife has discovered their Pizza and Grilled Chicken Caesar salads as well… Imagine a salad stuffed into a small pizza sort like a pita or flatbread and you get the idea.

Awesome food, great people, and sports any time of day is tough to pass up for a neighborhood pub. They have seen my ugly mug there at least once every couple of weeks for a long while now and I don’t think that’s going to change. :)

So be sure to look them up at 9475 Briar Village Point, Colorado Springs, CO 80920. Check out their website, which has their full menu listed for take-out orders. Call ahead and they’ll have it ready to go – 719-264-6161.

Check ‘em out!

Hi all…

In the last few years I’ve gone to quite a few mechanics in the Colorado Springs Area. I’m not a mechanic by any stretch of the imagination and have to rely on other folks who are actually mechanically-inclined to explain what needs to be done to my vehicles.

When a major seal at the bottom of the engine of my 1995 Toyota 4Runner quit and I ended up with antifreeze in the engine, it had to be rebuilt. The guys at Advantage Auto (719-593-9099, website) did that and got the air conditioning working again as well. The engine runs great even 4 years later.

Then when the catalytic converter went out in my 1995 Toyota 4Runner, I went to Advantage Auto and they were definitely not the least expensive quote I got by calling around. Though I trust them to do great work, supposedly the catalytic converter shouldn’t be rocket science. So I ended up going to Meineke off North Academy (719-590-7605, website). They took care of me quickly and without a lot of fuss. On another occasion, the spedometer went out in the car and they got a new one in and working within a day. So they do great work.

And we’d been going to Big O Tires for tires for many years, but only recently started using them as a more regular mechanic shop. The one off Austin Bluffs (719-599-4555, website) is awesome and we’ve had them do work on both my 4Runner and my wife’s 2002 4Runner (yes, we like 4Runners). Jesse and the rest of the team have treated us very well and managed to get a cupholder back in my wife’s car in about 10 minutes (our kids popped it out) that the Toyota dealership said it would take a couple of days and wanted to charge us $500.

So if you’re looking for good folks to do good work on a vehicle, I would definitely recommend the folks at Advantage Auto, Meineke, and Big O Tires.

If you know of any other great garages around town, drop me a comment and leave me a note so other people know where to go when the need arises!

Hi again…

A few months ago, my wife introduced me to a place called Five Guys Burgers and Fries. It’s on North Academy between Woodmen and Briargate on the west side of Academy. You wander in and the first thing you notice are the bags of potatoes providing a short wall guiding you from the front doors to the counter…

Once you’re at the counter, you are presented with a very simple menu. Do you want a burger or a dog? (I haven’t tried the dogs yet, but I’m sure they’re yummy too.) How many burgers? With or without cheese or bacon? (A “little” burger is a single patty while one without “little” in the description is a double.) And what do you want on it? Unlimited toppings from a simple menu makes it easy to customize.

And then there’s the fries… You can do “Five Guys Style” or “Cajun.” And though I’m personally not a huge fan of the Cajun fries, I swear they cook the Five Guys Style fries with some kind of addictive substance beyond the peanut oil – perhaps crack cocaine.

When they call your number, you get your food in a plain paper bag with some napkins. There’s typically somewhere to sit inside or they have a few tables outside, but be aware that the place gets super busy at lunchtime.

And that’s it. Sounds simple enough, but even though the place is a bit out of the way from my house (5.5 miles according to Google, but with the construction about Woodmen and Academy these days it seems like it takes forever some days) I find myself struggling with whether or not to get my burger fix more often than once every few weeks!!

As my best friend recently said (quoting Sam Jackson in Pulp Fiction) “Now that’s a tasty burger…” It’s worth the trip. Check out Five Guys Burgers and Fries at 7252 N. Academy Blvd or call them at 719-264-6400. If you like a good burger, you won’t be sorry!

Sectional-type overhead garage doors in the st...

Hi all…

A couple of months ago, I managed to back into our garage door before it was all the way open. Yes, I felt like a fool. But we were given the number for Gooley Garage Doors and even though I called about 9:30pm on a Saturday night, I got a call back within minutes. Gabby was very nice on the phone and said she’d be out on Monday morning to do an estimate.

She arrived promptly that next Monday morning, gave us the most reasonable estimate I could have asked for, and I told her we’d call her back after we got the other estimate we were waiting for that day. The other estimate came from Overhead Garage Doors, which though highly recommended by a neighbor across the street, came in higher than Gabby’s estimate and for a less energy efficient door. Obviously we went with Gooley Garage Doors.

Though it took about a week to get the parts and find a time that worked to get the new door installed, by that following Saturday we had a pretty new door that worked better and quieter than the old one. And we got it without hassling over the price or discovering any hidden charges. In addition, Gabby’s husband Eric and his helper managed to rehang our aging garage door opener so it wasn’t quite in as precarious a position and ready to fall.

They did a great job. The new door looks great and is energy efficient (granting us an energy rebate on our taxes next year) and we couldn’t be happier. The next time I drive into my garage door, I know who I’ll call.

So if you’re looking for a local company to do a garage door repair or get one replaced, I can highly recommend you give Gooley Garage Doors a call at 719-322-8064 or drop them an e-mail at gooleydoors (at) yahoo (dot) com. They’re located at 204 Mount View Lane, Suite #8, Colorado Springs, CO 80907. They even have a website at GooleyGarageDoors.com.

And before you ask – no, this isn’t a paid advertisement. They did a great job and I wanted to share the word so they could do for you what they did for us.
